Students run for a worthy cause
  HYDERABAD : Braving the chilly Sunday morning, more than 5,000 students from various age groups turned up at TKR College, Meerpet to take part in a half marathon organised to spread awareness on the theme ‘Following Traffic Rules for Safety'. The 21 kilometre half-marathon, which also had 10K, 5K and 3K run, was organised by TKR Foundation in collaboration with The Hindu, which was the media partner for the event. The course of the half-marathon, which started at 6 a.m., included TKR College, Meerpet, L. B. Nagar to Uppal Cross Roads. In an attempt to inculcate the concept of following traffic rules among youngsters, a special 3K run for children below the age of 15 years was also organised on the occasion. Commissioner, Cyberabad Police, S. Prabhakar Reddy, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, said that youth should maintain physical fitness, which helps reduce stress levels. “Such events will definitely help in spreading awareness among common public on proper use of roads and following traffic rules,” he said. Chairman of TKR Foundation Teegala Krishna Reddy stressed on the need to take precautionary measures while riding two wheelers. “More than 3,000 road accidents occur every year. Most of the accident victims are two-wheeler riders. On behalf of the foundation, we will take up similar awareness drives regularly,” he said. Regional General Manager, The Hindu, Hyderabad, P. Ranga Reddy was also present. Good response Prizes worth Rs. 5 lakh were distributed to winners in each category under various running competitions. Apart from students, public from various walks of life including women, police, sportspersons from Indian Railways and youth organisations from far off places including Anantapur, Adilabad and Khammam participated in the programme.
